The exact meaning of this section of Havamal is obscure but it bares a striking resemblance to the story of Alviss the dwarf. Alviss arrives at Thor’s home demanding to marry his daughter. Thor uses a test of knowledge to keep the dwarf talking all night and when the sun rises, Alviss turns to stone.
